A
second generation native San Diegan, Lindsey grew up near Balboa
Park, played on La Jolla’s beaches and took her first art
class at seven, at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Art was
a strong part of her high school and college education. With a relocation
to Bedford, N.Y. in 1985 she was able to study with instructors
from the Art Students League, National Academy, and Silvermine School
of Art: David Leffel, Daniel Green, Peter Layne Arguimbau, Charles
Sovek, and Rudy Colao. However, it was Leffel’s ‘Monitor’
of 7 years, Frank Janca, a student of Leffel and Robert Beverly
Hale, became Lindsey’s greatest teacher. While his student
for two years, she studied Maroger/Old Master still life, portrait,
and landscape, and spent 3 weeks in France painting en plein air.
Further strengthening her skills, she spent the next 2.5 years studying
Botanical Art & Illustration: drawing (I-IV), pen & ink,
metalpointe, watercolour, and oil painting at The New York Botanical
Garden.
In 1995,
Lindsey returned to San Diego, built a studio in her rose garden,
surrounded by 90 rose bushes, and combined the teachings of Mr.
Janca, with her knowledge of Botanical Illustration, she executed
effusive still life paintings placing a strong emphasis on nature’s
bounty and beauty.
In 2001,
she wrote a curriculum combining botanical illustration, practical
studio experience, and being a professional artist, and founded
the Botanical Art Institute of San Diego. See Classes for curriculum.
On
sabbatical from teaching, she is a passionate student of nature
painting en plein air, recalling the teachings of Frank Janca and
Ray Roberts (2000). Lindsey is a member of the American Society
of Botanical Artists, B.A. Guild of So. Ca., and the California
Art Club. She has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions since
1990. Her work was recently seen at the 1st Annual ASBA North American
Western Region Exhibit at Loveland Museum Feb.-April 2003. Her painting
Tillandsia reuterii received the Merit Award for Other Color (see
Gallery). The painting was also juried into the ASBA/ Horticultural
Society of New York's Sixth Annual International Juried Botanical
Art Exhibition in Sept. 2003.
Her work
was featured in American Artist Magazine, Oct. 2004, The Gardener
(back cover, French Tulips), Jan. 2002, Arts, Crafts & Collectibles
(cover), Dec. 2002 as well as San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles,
and Decor & Style magazines.
She has
exhibited her paintings in San Diego, CA., Greenwich, CT., Loveland,
