Lindsey McCloskey botanical artist

Until further notice, Ms. Kent is on Sabatical.

• Botanical Art & Illustration •

Botanical Illustration encompasses a wide variety of techniques for depicting botanical subjects in fine art, scientific illustration and commercial design.

• Objective •

The purpose of these classes is to share with the student, the information that was given to me by exceptional teachers at The New York Botanical Garden, and to continue the tradition of fine Botanical Illustration. It was a privilege to walk those hallowed halls and study with great teachers who were also notable professional Botanical Artists including the program director Dr. Pat Kay, Katie Lee, and others. I hope to ignite in the student a lifelong appreciation for this fine artform, as they did in me.

• Course Content •

Drawing I - Basic (prerequisite).
Learn to observe and draw accurately with focus on shapes, light, shadow, perspective, visual depth, creativity, grades of paper, and types of drawing pencils.

Drawing II -Plants.
Refine technical skills, drawing techniques, composition, textures, and tonal rendering of plant material.

Drawing III - Flowers.
Intensive drawing exercises focus on a different flower form each week. Students create very accurate representations in their drawing “notes”, then work from these notes to develop finished drawings that emphasize principles of excellent composition. Develop creativity and your style.

Colored Pencil.
This class is designed to create a smooth transition from drawing in graphite to painting in color. Emphasis is placed on Colored Pencil techniques, color theory, layering and it's application in creating realistic plant and floral representations.

Botanical Watercolor I
Basic, II – Plants, & III – Flowers.
These classes follow the same format as the above drawing classes, starting with building skills, before using precise brushwork to create accurate botanical paintings, learn color mixing, value, hue, intensity and how to select shadow colors. Emphasis is on realistic portrayal of botanical subjects and traditional methods of dry brush watercolor painting with attention to detail and color accuracy.
